I’m from Poland where one can get that impression but not sure if it’s a general Catholic thing or just our national one. For example, Saint Mary was proclaimed Queen of Poland back in 17th century ( [see link](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Most_Holy_Virgin_Mary,_Queen_of_Poland) ) and there’s even a congregation dedicated to Saint Mary created in Poland ( [see link](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Congregation_of_Marian_Fathers_of_the_Immaculate_Conception) ). Roadside shrines usually portray Mary too, not a cross.
