How straightforward is going through immigration when entering America as a citizen?

Here in Europe, most countries have e-Gates that allow you to enter upon landing without seeing an immigration officer if you are a citizen of a EU or EEA country. I asked my American if the US had something like this and he said Global Entry which still requires signing up beforehand.
