For a bit of background I’m 18m, I was homeschooled all my life and I’m from the UK. I have worked in a chip shop for 6 months before I had to move house.(my coworkers were all older women, so I had nothing to relate to, making conversation awkward for me)

Now after a 3 month break I’ve just started a new job at a supermarket on twilight shift stacking shelves.

So far I’ve only had 1 shift but I’m really finding conversations difficult, I struggle to find words to say, even when taking about things I like, it’s as if my brain just doesn’t work fast enough. I mean, I *can* respond and chuckle at jokes and stuff, but I feel like I’ve got nothing to offer in terms of conversation

I feel left out and really down, I’ve always been awkward talking to people, I was just hoping that I’d find it easier to talk to people my age, but no, I still find it hard.

So anyways, that’s my rant over, do you have any advice for me on how to get better at talking to people? I just want to have friends and act like a normal person.

  1. Your brain might just be a little overwhelmed at first. You are learning a new job in a new place, and meanwhile you’re meeting new people. It’s OK to not walk away from one shift having made friends. Give yourself some time to get your bearings. Once the work is second nature, your brain will have more “bandwidth” for conversations.
