US expat here. Moving to Brighton, UK next year to be with my partner.

I’m planning to furnish my flat with mostly used furnishings, but don’t know where to find such things.

In America we have thrift stores on every corner, but all I’m finding on yelp are curated vintage “thrift” shops.

Is there an app brits use to sell their old belongings? Facebook marketplace or something else? What do you do with your trash/treasure?!

  2. The British Heart Foundation charity shops are one of the best places to get used furniture that doesn’t get labelled as vintage or antique. There is one in Brighton.

Worth checking out the vintage shops as well though. You can find reasonably priced items in them.

  3. In addition to what the other user said, Freecycle and FB groups often have people selling cheap/free furniture.

Also, just walking around! When I used to live there, I’d often find really nice bits of furniture just dumped around.. Brought a few back, gave them a solid clean and a lick of paint and they’re good as new.

  4. Shops wise the term you’re looking for over here is “charity shop”. There are some that specialise in furniture (BHS being the main one) but there will be either larger charity shops with furniture, or small shops with small furniture (eg little side tables).

You might find it easier to search for charity furniture collection or donation, as any charity which will pick up old furniture from your house will be selling it somewhere. That will give you means to filter out the charity shops which just sell household items, books and clothes etc.

All charity shops will stock small household items like plates, mugs and glasses.

Other places to try are Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree, eBay, Freecycle and Freegle. There are also some home bits on Vinted, Depop, Shpock and Nextdoor (local social network).

  5. All your answers are good, but the biggest thing to bear in mind is that thrift stores have a different name here- charity shops.

  6. Freecycle has been an absolute gem for me. Also street furniture (things folk leave out on the street for others to take), have got chairs, tables and cabinets from the street.

  7. Use Facebook Marketplace, Shpock, Vinted or even Depop for used local or delivered furniture. They helped me a lot when I moved out of my family home.
