Hi all,

I’m from Ireland, going on holidays to the European mainland. Taking a ferry to the UK, eurotunnel to france and driving the rest. From what I gather, I can bring a kilo of tobacco between EU countries for personal use, however the UK is a stop on the journey home.

Allowances from the EU into the UK are significantly lower than between EU countries, (250g into the UK vs 1kg between EU countries) however given the UK isn’t my destination, will the 250g allowance affect how much I can transport through the UK?

The tobacco is being bought in an EU country, will be consumed in an EU country, but it will have to be transported through the UK. How much can I bring?

Thanks in advance!

  2. No.

You enter the country and pass through customs, then you need to live by UK rules.

If you don’t pass through customs, then you can do it.

  3. Technically there are rules for transit goods where you don’t pay anything but they are for trucks shipping tons of stuff and involves a load of paperwork.

Being pragmatic you’re not going to get caught with a bag of baccy in your glove box so just don’t go waving it in the face of customs officials and no one will notice.
