In India, many of our universities are in prime area of the town with huge tracts of land. This happens because new university came up in a cheap area with huge land, and then the city organically grew around the university.

As a result, a professor or teacher cannot afford to live there after a few years.

To solve this, most universities have faculty accommodations which are free. this are built to account for the number of teachers there will be. Junior teachers get studios and as you grow in seniority you get a house and then a bigger house.

This way, no university has the problem of young teachers being priced out.

Does USA do such a thing? Here also universities are big. Do they make teacher accomodations/housing?

  1. At both universities I attended, there were a few Faculty in Residence who lived on campus and also worked with various residence life programs. They’re supposed to be the liaisons between students and faculty, so they get their housing as compensation for the extra job.

  2. Yes, most universities have “university housing” for faculty/staff. If you’re ever offered a position, as about their housing.

University housing is usually reasonable and affordable. Also, your salary is much higher in the US as a professor than in India.

  3. They exist but it is not a common thing.

My wife’s a professor and as much as I would like a free house I do like owning a house.

The faculty housing is usually for visiting professors not the permanent faculty.
