In my country, second hand stores are popular, especially among people who couldn’t afford to buy clothes/shoes and people who are saving their money. Clothing and shoes stores in shopping malls tend to be expensive than second hand stores. Most people who buying clothes/shoes at second hand stores are low and middle class people, however there are high income people buying clothes/shoes at second hand stores too.

So I wondering are second hand stores popular in your country? Do you guys buy clothes and/or shoes at second hand stores (like me and my family)?

  1. Second hand stores are incredibly popular here in Denmark. I live in a small (by Danish standards) town. And we have approximately 11 second hand stores, and that’s excluding the insanely active FB marketplace.

But in The Faroe Islands, where I’m originally from, we have one single second hand store covering the entire island that I lived on.

  2. I would say that in Russia they are very popular, even in our city where about 300 thousand people live, there are about 10 such stores, or even more. I myself love them very much. There are some interesting clothes. Every time I feel like it’s a little adventure with an unknown reward. Especially fun to go with friends. Unless, of course, you have different sizes))))))

  3. Many people shop in those, especially the people looking for more hipster type of style. I don’t, it would feel weird to me to use someone else’s old clothes and clothes aren’t that expensive.

  4. Yeah, they are pretty popular. Nowadays you can find people from all walks of life in thrift shops, from young to old, poor to rich, bargain hunters and fashionistas. Online second hand platforms like Vinted (mostly focussed on clothes) or Marktplaats (for basically everything imaginable) are also really popular.

I’m almost exclusively buying second hand clothes these days, although mostly online since my local thrift shop doesn’t have a great assortment of clothing. I also buy a lot of books and old camera equipment in thrift shops.

  5. Pretty popular in the UK. I buy about 70% of my clothes second hand and almost all my books. It is very rare that I buy second hand shoes but a lot of that is down to choice, you don’t tend to get as many pairs of shoes and they are often smart shoes, which I don’t wear very often.

  6. Popular-ish. There’s a lot of second hand shops around, but it’s still not the normal or default route for everyone. I encountered a couple of people that looked down on me for buying second-hand clothes about 10/15 years back, but I think these days people are more relaxed about it – especially since ‘thrifting’ became a social media trend among young women. There’s a social divide also between second hand shops and ‘vintage’ stores – the latter aren’t associated with poor people and pensioners the way the former are.
