Americans, why do your cars have the steering wheel on the passenger side?

2. We have left hand drive because we won the Revolution and didn’t become a long-term colony.

   This way the driver can lean all over the passenger when driving

   We drive on a different side of the road than you do in the UK, so the driver is on a different side of the car.
