I have a baseball cap that I’ve grown very fond of over the years but I’ve noticed that it is starting to smell a little bit from how much I’ve worn it. Do any of you guys know what is the best way to clean it without ruining it?

  1. If it doesn’t have a cardboard bill, Chuck it in a washing bag, then chuck it in a warm + gentle cycle. Wash it with a big load of other stuff so it keeps its shape.

  2. I’ve washed mine a couple times by hand in the bathroom sink.

Just plug the sink, fill it with lukewarm water and a tiny drop of laundry detergent (just enough to make some bubbles), and then just wash it by hand.

After that I drain the water and just rinse it under cool running water for a minute or two, gently squeezing it to get the suds out. And then hang it up to dry. Should do the trick.

  3. I used to put mine in the dishwasher by itself on the top rack, with no soap. I would take out after the wash cycle finished and just air dry. Now, I never had a problem doing that – but results may vary.

  4. I usually do warm water and oxiclean soak. Agitate by hand. Soak, agitate, repeat. Soft bristle brush, like a worn out toothbrush around the areas that get gross. Drain and do a soak with fresh water. Rinse and air dry.

  5. I hand-wash mine in the sink with laundry detergent. Pro tip: mix the detergent into the water BEFORE putting your hat in. Drizzled the detergent on the hat once, and ended up with super-clean lines and the rest of the hat kinda clean.

I’m a field surveyor and construction inspector, so for my ‘work hats’ I’ll have to do this 3-4 times a year.

  6. Put it in the washing machine, just don’t put it in the dryer. I usually stuff it with towels to keep its shape and let it air dry.

  7. I wear mine into the shower, “shampoo” it after I do my hair, I have a soft bristled beard brush I scrub it with. Hang it from the faucet until I get out, then set it on top of an empty plastic coffee “can”. Let it dry. Been doing it this way for yrs.

  8. Soak it in some water + detergent. Agitate the hat a bit. Empty the water. Soak it again.

Dry and your hat should be clean.
