I’m talking foods which aren’t available or hard to get throughout the year. For me, it has to be Hot Crossed Buns!

  1. Those plums you get by the side of the road in summer. Most fruit from the UK in summer to be fair

  2. Hamantaschen (Jewish pastries served at the Purim festival – three cornered things with a sweet poppyseed filling)

    Lebkuchen (German Christmas gingerbread)

Game birds (pheasant, partridge, grouse, pigeon, wild duck etc)

Fresh matjes herring (dutch speciality, fat young herring fillets cured – “gibbed” – in their own digestive enzymes. Truly delicious, not nasty like that sounds. If you’ve been to Holland you’ve probably seen them being sold from fast-food vans, served with raw onion)

  3. I have to agree with hot cross buns. This year there’s a fantastic range of flavours across various supermarkets aside from the traditional ones. Definitely recommend going to M&S and getting some of their double chocolate ones, along with their golden blonde and salted caramel ones. Their blueberry ones are nice too. Asda have some pink hot cross buns which are white chocolate and cranberry flavoured. I tried their red Leicester and tomato ones too but I really didn’t like them.

I need to get a few packs of the interesting flavoured ones and put them away in the freezer before they go away again!

  4. The little Mini egg cakes from supermarkets that are just cake bars with a mini egg on top but I can never resist

  5. the only time i visit greggs is in december, for the festive bake. tesco’s cranberry, sage, and onion bread is also stupid good (also december).

i could very easily make both at home. i’m not going to.

  6. The blackberries that grow in the meadow opposite my house.

I never knew that blackberries could be deliciously sweet with not even a hint of tartness until I moved here.

  7. Christmas cake! (with royal icing and marzipan of course)

I guess simnel cake would be a close second – I just haven’t had it for years.

  8. Pakistani Mango – it’s heaven in mouth. It should be a crime not to experience it once every summer.

  9. Corn on the cob.

We normally get the frozen stuff year round, but having the fresh ears of corn with the leaves still on is great.
Got a BBQ recently so I’m looking forward to doing some on there.
