It seems like one of the most quintessentially American things are family picnics at the park, and by that I mean the classic cloth on the ground sitting on grass kind of picnic. However, I feel like it’s been declining as a practice, so does your family still do it? Is it still a thing?

  1. My family would take picnics to the park growing up, although we usually spread a tablecloth over the park table instead of eating on the ground. It’s just easier and cleaner and more sanitary, plus my parents both have bum knees so sitting on the ground would have been very difficult.

  2. Not anymore but we did when I was a kid. We usually went to the local VA because they had huge mowed fields so we could bring the dogs.

  3. We do sometimes. We were at the the park in Boston (Boston common) at mother’s day and families picnicking were EVERYWHERE -little tables with tablecloths, umbrellas with fringe to block the sun, baskets, and the whole shebang.

We hike a lot so picnicking is a break during a hike, or sometimes I find a beautiful spot while we are traveling and grab take out sandwiches

New England has lots and lots of little independent sandwich shops, diner lunch restaurants. Some of them actually have picnic lunches you order. Sandwiches, sides, dessert and you choose a drink.

  4. All the time. That’s probably a weekly occurance in the summer for us.

That said, the picnic us usually a means to an end. We do a lot of day trips to go biking or kayaking. Having a cooler with some sandwiches and stuff is awesome. Its really nice to be able to just stop next to the lake, or in a park, or along a trail and have a nice meal.

  5. Me and my boyfriend regularly go to the beach and we bring snacks and a cooler and if we’re spending the whole day there, we bring our portable charcoal grill to make dinner or lunch.

  6. Not as a family. My family never really did that. I do it regularly in the summer, though. It’s one of my favorite date activities.

  7. The last family picnic I had I was like 10 or 11. And it was at the beach. The last picnic I been to was with a couple of friends in early 2020 at Central Park.

  8. I don’t have a family. But it seems more like: do outdoor recreation and also eat food we brought when it is mealtime.

  9. My wife and I love to picnic. But nah it’s not super common. But seriously folks…..a nice loaf of bread, a few nice cheeses, some charcuterie and a bottle of wine. A nice summer day and a book to read. Love it.

  10. I just did it yesterday. But I sat on a bench at the park, I got a bad back, I need a backrest for support

  11. I married a Mexican-American and picnics/BBQs at the park for birthdays is a time-honored tradition in that culture. Our son will turn 1 in May and we’re planning on a park picnic for his birthday.

  12. My family drinks too much Budweiser and most have abuse protection orders against each other. A picnic at the park sounds like slang my uncles would use for a drug deal or bi monthly gathering to scrap in public over one of them calling the others wife a hot mess on Facebook. No, no we do not have traditional picnics lol.

  13. Yup. Usually at a lake state park or the beach, occasionally at our local city park. Our neighborhood also has a park and every summer our neighbors get together and drag a grill out there and have a potluck/cookout.

  14. Never really did that growing up. Probably because the nearest park was 30 minutes away but we had a deck with chairs right outside if we wanted to eat outdoors.

  15. Absolutely yes, and more since the pandemic made eating in a restaurant so dangerous. We (family with 3 teenagers at home) found that it works REALLY well to get takeout from a couple of places, so everyone can get what they like, then take it to a grassy spot and picnic.

Yes, we get stared at by passers-by, but they can go blow, and they don’t know what they’re missing.

  16. I won’t make food specifically to go to the park and eat, and won’t bring my family either. But I will definitely go get fast food and bring it to the park and eat, especially if it’s at the beach. Best thing ever

  17. We would for Holidays, but now the parks are crowded and you need to get there early or the night before.

  18. Oh God I think the last time we did that was when I was still in high school. 20ish years ago. The closest thing we get now is eating lunch at my grandparents grave on their birthdays.

  19. Relatively fewer than I think you’re thinking but we definitely have lunches in public parks, especially for Spring or Summer holidays like Easter or Independence Day. Heck, it was (is) a tradition in my hometown to camp out in one of the public parks to watch the Easter sunrise (officially this is no longer a thing and will get you a thrown out and possibly a trespassing charge but… people still do it in spite of the City).

  20. We go a few times during the summer, have a checkered blanket and everything. Not sure about elsewhere, but in my city it’s pretty common. Always other folks at the park picnicking too when we go.

  21. All the time when the kids were younger. Still pack a lunch when we go to the beach, or when our community has concerts by the lake.

  22. We’ve done it occasionally, but recently the closest we’ve gotten was to throw the occasional little two-car tailgate in Yellowstone 😉

(Yes, I know I’m a name-dropper. Yes, we kept it clean and didn’t leave anything to attract wildlife.)

  23. I’ve only had one picnic in my life. It was with my wife on our third date. It was also the middle of august so we did it at 10pm

  24. We try but it really works out. I’m in Florida now and there’s always mosquitoes and shit. But when we lived up north we did!

  25. The main park that used to be good for picnicking is now overrun with homeless encampments. So no.

  26. I used to do that with my grandson when he was small now we mostly go down to the river and do it.

  27. Yes! And if you drive past Griffith Park pretty much any given day you’ll see people picnicking.

My SO and I like to get a little charcuterie to go and we always have a blanket in the car (for beaches, grass, outdoor movies, etc). I feel like during 2020 there were more outdoor picnics because people wanted to see their friends or family but outside was safer.

  28. Never really did it at the park, except for at a Shakespeare festival one time. We did, however, vibe immensely with the beach picnic.
