Hey everyone,

As the title states I turned 30 this year, am currently unemployed with no career to speak of and am at a loss for what to do. Will likely be moving back in with my parents for a bit at the end of this month. I feel like I am very short on time and the next “thing” I try has to stick or I’m fucked and doomed to a shit life.

I worked in marketing for a few years and hated it. Did a little less than a year of carpentry assistant work just out of college when I was ~27 and liked it during the summer but it was brutal during the winter/spring. Digging holes with melting snow draining on me was not fun.

Right now I’m considering two paths: learning to code, or throwing myself into a trade. Using the myriad of free resources on the internet to teach myself Javascript the past few weeks and I’ve enjoyed it and things are starting to click for me a bit. That being said I hate sitting all god damn day. That was one of the worst parts of my previous office jobs; sitting all day and working on shit that I did not find satisfying. The upsides to coding are that I can take a bootcamp and be near job ready in ~3 months.

The alternative I’ve been researching is HVAC. From what I understand it can pay decently, but looking at jobs in my area they seem few & far between and are looking for people who have years worth of experience and gasfitting licenses, etc. Doing an active job sounds nice but I’m not sure I love the idea of breathing in chemicals, dust & shit for hours every day. I’ve also heard that the trades are a young mans game–how many years could I really expect to be an effective worker if I’m starting at 30?

I feel like I don’t really have any marketable skills that I’ve learned from my previous jobs so I’m expecting to be starting at the bottom regardless where I go.

I know this post is kind of vague and all over the place, I’m definitely very frustrated, irritated and upset with myself for being in this situation.

Anyone else been in/currently dealing with a similar situation? The future looks grim to me, so if anyone has any advice it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.
