They used to be legal and if you got one before the ban you can still keep them. I presume it’s rabies related but that’s been around forever so why make them legal in the first place?

I think they were originally banned because an invasive species in Europe and they pose risk to the local wildlife if they are given too much freedom, if they escape altogether or their owner releases them. However, if I’m not mistaken this was EU legislation, so I’m not sure what the UKs stance on it is now.

  2. Invasive species so a risk to the native wildlife….although I did vaguely look (out of interest) a few years ago and I think the TB risk was also a problem but I didn’t think they fell under any licensing issues.

    To be honest, I didn’t know it was now illegal for them to be bred or sold. I would suspect any ownership now is under license like the dangerous animals
