I sort of appreciate both – shaved for a nice “clean” look, but hairy for a natural, adult kind of feel. Slight preference toward the latter, but it’s nowhere near a deal breaker. My partner has always shaved – that’s her preference and I’m happy with that.
I’d be slightly concerned with him saying you’re “not allowed” to shave – ultimately it’s your preference, being your body. I get the sense it’s a throwaway comment though, and I don’t think you’ll get too much backlash if you shave it anyway.

It’s hair. If someone didn’t put any effort into grooming the hair on their head, it would almost unanimously be seen as looking bad. Pubic hair is the same. If you’re not putting any effort into grooming it then it looks less appealing than someone who does put in an effort.
