I apologise if this has been asked before, I just haven’t seen them anywhere else. I also apologise for the flair I wasn’t sure which one to put.

  1. Yes. They’re cheap, you buy them in bulk, and you throw them away afterwards. Still have no idea what’s so confusing to non Americans about it but it seems to genuinely throw y’all for a loop.

  2. The Red Solo Cup is super cheap and almost every shop sells them. Every party I went to in high school and college had them (though sometimes the blue ones were also common). I’m

  3. Red Solo cups are very common. I don’t think I’ve been to a single party that didn’t have them.

  4. Yes, Solo cups. You can get 50 of them for like $5, so they’re perfect for parties.

They also come in other colors, but red’s the most common.

  5. Yes. I always have red solo cups at my house. We use them for everything.

  6. They’re cheap and available nearly everywhere. I’ve even seen liquor stores do a package deal with a sleeve of red Solo cups and a pack of beer pong balls.

  7. Every time someone asks this I genuinely wonder what the rest of the world drinks out of at parties. Do y’all wanna do dishes for 50 of your friends? I sure don’t….

  8. Red Solo Cups, yes. They’re very cheap and easy to find. (Hell there’s a song about them!)

  9. No need to apologize.

They are called Solo cups, which is a brand name. They come in all kinds of colors, but red is the most popular. They are cheap and you can buy them in sleeves of 50-100 at any grocery store.

So if you are in college and throwing a keg party, you would buy a couple of sleeves of those. People would pay $5 for a cup and you write your name on it with a marker.

  10. Yes, they are super common, and cheap, so they are easy supplies for parties when you don’t want to break the bank. Red is by far the most common color, but hey also come in blue, green, yellow, and purple.

  11. Can this be in the faq? Yes. They’re cheap, bought in bulk, and disposable

  12. I prefer the blue ones.

They’re incredibly convenient. They’re pretty sturdy. The lines are for different size markings. They don’t break if you drop them.

And some drinks such as beer benefit from a wider open. Beer flavor is greatly influenced by your olfactory sense, so you lose much of the flavor if drinking from a can or bottle. The opening is too small to pass scent.

  13. Wait, you don’t have solo cups where you live? I though that they were fairly ubiquitous around the world.

But, to answer your question… yes. Especially at the “house party” age (end of high school and during college) and at mass party events like group BBQs. Essentially, any event where a ton of people will be drinking and you don’t want to risk breaking or having to clean actual glasses.

  14. It’s a thing among some demographics, and it’s widespread enough to have become something of a media trope. It’s in no way universal.

  15. Sort of, yes I’ll explain.

They’re called Solo Cups. Don’t pay too much attention to the name itself: it was just the name of a company (‘Solo’) that made really cheap disposable cups.

But Solo Cups got big and popular among college kids simply because they were the cheapest cups you could buy. Many a college party could have been very different if there wasn’t a big $5 case of 500 Solo Cups right there in the store next to the cheap booze.

It only worked for a little while of course: making a cheap cup isn’t that hard, and other companies jumped into the game with their own cheap food soon after.

But Solo Cups we’re most definitely a college stroke for many years.

  16. It’s a common question on the sub. Yes, these red cups are a common choice for disposable cups. They aren’t typically used for day-to-day use, but if you are holding a big party and want to use disposable cups they are the top choice. There are some off brand versions, but the Solo brand (the most popular one) actually has lines in the cup for common drink measurements to make consistent serving easy.

  17. It’s just a disposable cup. There is nothing special about it.

Many places outside the US use disposable plastic cups for larger parties or gatherings.

The brand Solo just cornered the market for them here in the US. Their most popular color also happens to be red.

  18. Why

    on earth

is this such a big deal for non-Americans??

They’re just disposable cups. We pick them up for super cheap when we have a party.

  19. There’s a *song* about the red solo cup. They are also cheap and vibrant to find in an aisle.

  20. Yes! Very much so, especially at cheap parties when you are a college (university) student, or house parties in your ’20s. We call them solo cups 🙂

  21. It’s been asked and answered in this sub about 100 times, but yes we buy disposable cups for parties and yes the most common variety is red.
