I am a little confused. I thought asking someone out means you ask them to go on a date with you. Am i mistaken?

  1. A date is a single event.

Going out is when you hang out all the time.

For example, “Alex and Amy are going out” means they are a couple.

  2. Just be clear about what you’re asking, e.g. “Would you like to go on a date?” vs “Would you like to be my girlfriend?” as something like “do you wanna go out” could be interpreted either way.
