Future plans would make me want to travel, volunteer, help people out and meet people in America. Seen as i’ve always been inexplicably drawn towards the country. As a teacher I would even like to explore my options of teaching there one day and owning a small cabin with a porch. But first off I need to know if there is a cheaper option than renting a van from a company.

  1. Renting is typically the more practical option. The rules vary by state, but my understanding is that it can be difficult to register and insure a car without a US address.

  2. it depends on how long you’re planning to stay. I know a couple of exchange students who’ve bought cars for ~1 year and sold them when they’re leaving. But if it’s only a couple of months it might not be worth it, especially with the high prices. And that typically requires you to have a US address (which the international students had as they were living in the US, but you might not).

TL;DR — renting is likely easier

  3. You can technically buy a vehicle, you just can’t register it or insure it without a legal US living address. It’s not like buying a motorcycle in Vietnam where there are few to little regulations.

Turo is like Airbnb for cars, but may be complicated for international travelers. Your most realistic option is simply renting from Enterprise, Hertz, etc.
