Hey y’all!

We’re a European family organising a trip to the States. One of our planned stops is Antelope Canyon. There’s this tour organised by Navajo Tours we’d be interested in. We’re travelling at the end of July but from the 17th everything is greyed out on the calendar you can see on their website. We don’t know if this is because it’s too soon or because everything’s been booked or they’re just closed, and we can’t contact them because there’s no e-mail address.

I know this must be a long shot, but is anyone from here familiar with Navajo Tours and can help us understand?

  1. If you see tour dates, hotel dates, etc… grayed out, its because it isn’t available.

Many outdoor sites, national parks, etc… have exploded in popularity since 2020 and this is even trickling down to state parks and forests. If you aren’t booking at least 6 months in advance for tours, campgrounds, overnight RV parking, etc…, you’re probably not going to be able to see this specific site.

  2. The 17th as cutoff is an obvious indication that the system likely does not allow booking further out than X months in advance, given that today is 3/17. I would suggest you check tomorrow or next week and see if another day/week has opened for booking.

Anyway, the canyon *is* as beautiful as it looks, but at least pre-pandemic they ran a *lot* of people through it each day on the upper canyon, so realize you’re not going to get the place to yourself (at least in peak season).

There is both a lower and an upper canyon, and they are separate tours/tour companies. Most people only do the upper canyon, but IMO if you’re going to be there and are able-bodied, try to do both. The lower canyon is much tighter, has more stairs/ladders, but is much more limited on number of people. AFAIK Ken’s Tours + Dixie’s are the only companies that run the lower canyon tours.

I’ll also mention that if you’re going to be in that area, there’s a number of other things worth seeing as well.

  3. I am in AZ and its gorgeous there. I went to the Grand Canyon in Nov and tried to go to Antelope Canyon again and it was booked up. It was closed for a while due to covid so now that its reopened its booked in advance.

  4. If you can’t get to Antelope, I’d suggest considering Peek-A-Boo Gulch. https://www.visitutah.com/things-to-do/slot-canyons/peek-a-boo-spooky-gulch

It’s almost as cool, it’s on public land (so no need to pay a guide or an entrance fee), and you can make a nice loop with another adjacent slot canyon. Be aware that it’s 25 miles down an unmaintained dirt road, so be careful if your vehicle doesn’t have much ground clearance, and don’t go if it’s rained in the past few days.
