I(30f) went on a family trip with my (32m)boyfriend and his family a couple months ago. I have only met my bfs family a few times throughout our relationship. It still feels very awkward being around them. I try my best to fit in and make conversation. During the trip we were riding in the car with his parents and sister. I started talking about my job and how it’s been extremely busy. And how I’m working 10+ hour shifts. While talking his mom interrupts and says “you should feel lucky to have a job!”. I was left with a bitter taste in my mouth. I wasn’t complaining at all. I actually love my job and what I do. I was just talking about how busy we have been. Maybe she thought I was complaining. I don’t know if I’m being ultra sensitive but I felt like what she said was kind of rude. My boyfriend thinks I took it the wrong way. It’s not the first time she’s made comments that were questionable. Anyway I don’t think she likes me. Was hoping you guys can give me your input.

TLDR: Boyfriends mom told me I should feel lucky to have a job when I was discussing work. Don’t know if I’m being dramatic.

  1. It sounds like a dumb, out of touch comment. I doubt she meant anything malicious by it – she just doesn’t understand the current state of things.

This is probably one of the cases where it’s best to just shrug it off and move on.

  2. Boomer talk

Don’t take it to heart. Some people just think in an old school way. You can’t change her. Keep topics light and fluffy.
