Star Wars is definitely one of the biggest movie franchises out there, and you would be hard-pressed to find an American who didn’t know about it. That being said, saying it’s central to our culture as a whole is a massive stretch. So in short, no.

Right now I would say the MCU is much more central to American culture.
Central? No. Widely known with a very large fandom? Yes.
Very widely known and super successful for sure, but don’t know about “central”.
