* Hello there!
* General Reddit ?

I will be travelling during approximately one week in Canada and one in United State with some friends. (I am French)

First question : (On documents to fill to enter USA) and Second one (a lot more interesting on bar/pubs/restaurant)

FIRST : We will enter USA by road, so we dunno if we need ESTA or I-94 or any other files because they always say “by sea or plane”. It is not really clear. Overmore, a statement say “beginning 1st of September, you will be able to enter USA throught Mexico and Canada with ESTA or I-94.” What is perfect with us is that we will enter USA on 29th of August and go back to Canada on 3d of September /X

SECOND : I look out for some specilaties and found out some good stuff but I also felt that some of them seems to be more “commercial” than typical. So do you have some little restaurant with special meals, a music bar than stangers musn’t know :p, I am ready to have your suggestion!

BONUS : If you have any question on Franceand why we eat frogs and snails, I am ready to answer :p

  2. I went to Dijon last week and there were snails everywhere. In all the fine restaurants and jars of them in the markets.

  3. For Boston, get to Faneuil Hall! There’s tons of different foods there and a neat experience.

For New York, a place my friend and I really like is Soup and Burger (Cozy Soup and Burger?), it’s near Washington Square Park.

  4. If you like crowded piano bars where Broadway performers sing in their spare time, Brandy’s Piano Bar in UES Manhattan is incredible. Just get there early, because it gets absolutely packed. If you like live blues music, Terra Blues downtown is incredible. Best blues club I’ve ever been to.

I really hope you meant to do a starwars reference. But even if you didn’t that still makes this funny.

  6. I-94? Are you entering the US in Michigan?

I guess it’s not *much* further than entering at I-90 or I-87, but it’s quite a hike. Do you have experience on long road trips?

  7. It looks like in October, they will start requiring the ESTA for land border crossings: https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/national-media-release/cbp-expands-esta-requirements-visa-waiver-program-travelers

However, you will be traveling before then, so the previous rules apply. Under those, if you’re entering the US by land, you don’t need the ESTA. However, if you don’t get one, you will have to park your car, go through secondary inspection, fill out paperwork, and pay a $6 fee.

To save time, I recommend you all get ESTAs. You can do that by going to this website and paying $14: https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov

Then, fill out your I-94 forms by going to this website and paying the additional $6 fee: https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/#/home

By doing those two things in advance, you should be able to skip the secondary inspection and cross the border without having to get out of your car.

  8. Most of us are Americans and don’t know what it’s like being a foreign national in our own country. You should contact the US Consulate/Embassy in your country if you have regards to Visa or travel related issues like ESTA.

Just like in your country, don’t eat near major tourist sites like Times Square just like you wouldn’t eat at a restaurant near the Eiffel Tower. Other than that, get on Google Maps and do some exploring.

In Boston, go explore the North End, the old Italian part of town. The Freedom Trail loops through there. Worth noting a lot of the tourism stuff in Boston focuses on American history. Its a pretty common school trip for kids in the general New England area. If you don’t love American history, Boston might be a tad dry to you.

Me personally Boston is one of my favorite American cities due to the combination of history, architecture, and food/culture.

  9. My assumption is that EU Citizens only needed ESTA to enter the US – so if the document is confusing, I might reach out to the USCPB for additional information.

As far as travel stuff.. I’m an ol’ New Yorker that lives in Boston. They’re *very* different cities.

As an FYI – Boston’s *Orange Line* Subway track will be completely shut down through most of September for maintenance, so **do not get a hotel/airbnb that relies on this line**. Red, Green or Blue are ideal.

If you PM me, I’m happy to give you a ton of Boston-related food, drink and activity recommendations, depending on what you’re into. Even non-touristy stuff.

For New York, you can pretty much do *anything* at anytime, *somewhere* in the city. Every NYC experience will be completely unique because it’s so easy to custom tailor your experience. Same as above, happy to give recommendations if you PM. Some people want to do Broadway Theater and Michelin Star dining. Others want to do crusty punk rock clubs and dive bars. Ya know?

  10. I imagine if you are traveling to Canada as a French person you are likely to be crossing at the NY border south of Montreal. From looking at CBP’s website, it appears you need to fill out the ESTA for your travel. I would do it to make sure or visit the US consulate in Paris (or wherever) and ask. The border crossing at NY and Quebec is fairly easy if you have the right paperwork. Europeans entering the USA at that crossing isn’t entirely unusual.

  11. Are you planning on driving from Mexico to Boston? I think you might be underestimating the amount of time it’s gonna to drive across the country.

  12. I lived in Boston for a good chunk of my life, here are my restaurant recommendations:

-Cheeky Monkey (a great bar located right next to Fenway Park where they brew their own beer in house)

-Carmelina‘s in the North End (Classic Italian-American located near the famous Mike‘s and Modern Pastry companies)

-Lolita Cocina (some of the best TexMex I‘ve had in my life, and I spent three years in Texas)

-Veggie Galaxy in Cambridge (a unique vegetarian restaurant that you have to see to believe)

-Legal Seafood (world famous for a reason)

For sightseeing I‘d recommend the Isabella Gardener Museum, Quincy Market, the Freedom Trail, the Museum of Fine Arts, Fenway Park, and the Public Gardens.

Also TAKE A DUCK BOAT TOUR. It’s cheesy, sure, but it’s classic Boston and I‘ve taken about 30 in my life and it never gets old.

  13. For Boston, my favorite restaurants:
    1.) Barcelona (south end)
    2.) Orinoco (south end)
    3.) Assagio’s (north end)
    4.) Cava (south end)
