I’m (24M) from Manchester, last month I joined a new company based in London and there is a big work social going on down there. I originally agreed to go to this social event and I thought my team were also all coming down as well as they’re the only people I know at the company, but earlier this week I found out it will just be me going (from my team), plus, as there isn’t a permanent office I’ll just be stuck working alone in my hotel room in the day (Ideally, if the rest of my team were coming down we’d book an office space). And then I’ll meet up with the rest of the team in the evening.

It seems such a waste of money and time just to go to London to go to the social event for one night (plus, I’m really dreading it as I’m a huge introvert). But, I do know they’ve already booked me a meal etc and I really don’t want to give a bad impression at my new company. Would you go down to London anyway?

  1. Yeah I’d go. I’d probably stay more than a day and make a trip out of it

  2. it depends how you’re thinking about the job – if it’s just a job job and you aren’t planning to stay for a long time or get promoted in the future, it’s fine to not go, but if you want to make a place for yourself longer term then it’s worth going down and getting to know people outside your team.
