What is it? And why is it called cream?

  1. It is British. Ask them.

If you’re asking because of that image of the American section in that ~~dutch~~ Belgian store, quite a few of those products are British.

  2. I have never heard of this term.

If you asked me to guess what somebody meant by “salad cream”, my first place my mind would go would be Ranch dressing, which is a creamy salad dressing consisting of mayonnaise and buttermilk (or substitutes), and other flavorings such as garlic, onion, mustard, and other herbs/ spices.

  3. It is apparently a British product that I believe is largely unfamiliar to Americans.

  4. That’s what the Brits call salad dressing, IIRC. Why they call it that when a lot of salad dressings aren’t creamy is beyond me.

  5. I’m assuming you saw that r/pics post about the “American section” at a Belgian supermarket. Salad cream is a British thing and that shelf probably had more British products than American.

  6. I never heard of that term until I met Brits abroad. It is simply not a thing in the US. From what I understand it’s a more vinegar-y version of mayonnaise.

  7. I’ve never heard of salad cream specifically. It might be related to salad dressing though.
