I (24F) am introverted and shy but I work in retail so I have to put on a fake personality and act positive, chatty, and enthusiastic. This is not who I actually am. I had social anxiety for a long time and lately I’ve been trying to mimic social skills that I see other people do well. It’s draining the soul out of me and sometimes I start to think I’m crazy putting on such an elaborate act. I don’t know how to balance these two personalities I have (at work and at home). It’s messing with my perception of myself and my personality. Is faking til you make it the way to go?

  1. I too have social anxiety and have developed a “customer” personality bc you really do need to be personable in retail. You’re not crazy, I think it’s fairly normal. I can’t even maintain conversation with my own colleagues bc of SA. At the end of the day just stick to the personality you’re most comfortable with

  2. It depends. Are you on a commission? If not then absolutely not, you can be as depressed, rude, salty all you want within reason. If you’re not a salesperson the fake personality is actually probably creeping people out.

However if you are making commission off of your sales then it may be best to keep the mask on around customers, and be yourself around coworkers. Vent if you’re tight with them.
