My wallet fell out of my pocket when I got home from the vet today. One of my neighbors returned it, but I’m about 75% sure they went through it first. I keep my cards and stuff in a particular order and have a few items that are organized quite particularly(like a card was flipped backwards, and some bills not in the right spot). Nothing seemed to be missing, I just find it a little off-putting that they went through everything in my wallet. I get pulling my driver’s license, but going through every card and even taking my bills out and putting them back. Is this an odd thing to do?

Be well!

Edit: I appreciate the perspectives. Other than checking the ID to get it back to the right place, I wouldn’t go through someone’s wallet. So I wasn’t sure if this was a normal thing people do.

  1. Definitely weird, especially if everything is still accounted for. I’d simply ask them “Did you look in here the other day?” Or some other type of opportunity to provide the truth

  2. Don’t be weird about it. He gave it back and as long nothing is missing everything is fine.

  3. Nah, just a curious person. Be glad your wallet and contents were returned. He could have thrown it in the trash.

  4. Up to u. If they are just credit card and debit card just call the bank and request new cards. Helps avoid a confrontation in case if they didn’t mean anything bad and still cover urself

  5. You should promptly look at any transactions with any cards that were in that wallet, and if possible temporarily freeze the card so it can’t be used until you reactivate it.

  6. There is absolutely nothing to be gained by bringing this up. If some rando had found it, they would’ve gone through the whole thing AND you wouldn’t have your wallet back.

Look at this as good information. Your neighbor is kind, but possibly a busybody. Do not ask him or her to watch your cat or water your plants in your house if you go on vacation. Unless you want your underwear drawer to be neatly ransacked.

  7. He probably wrote down your card details so that some time later, when you don’t remember this incident, he might use one of your cards to pay for something. Get new cards.

But since you already know that he looked through your wallet, there’s no use asking him about it. He is unlikely to give an honest answer.

And no, it’s not normal to look at everything in your wallet. The driver’s licence would have been all I would have looked at.

  8. You can always call the creditors and say you lost your wallet but it was returned. You wont be accountable for purchases on those days in case anything is wrong always better to be prepared.

  9. Maybe some if the stuff fell out when it hit the ground. You could say there was a phone number or a receipt in there that you cant find and ask if there were any other papers around it.
