Hi, I need my signature witnessed on a form by a solicitor, I have emailed half a dozen solicitor who have all quoted me fees in the region of £100+. I’m really confused, as I understand this is a service that should be provided for a nominal fee and it takes less than 5 minutes? Anyone had this problem before and how did you find someone ? Thanks.

Edit: Hi all, thanks for responses. Yes, in this case it does need to be a solicitor, notary or magistrate, not just anyone of “good standing”. But I have found someone to sign now!

  1. Call a solicitors and ask if you can come in for a stat dec (statutory declaration). You might need to call a few before you find one that has someone available.

Bigger solicitors are better and don’t try on a Monday or a Friday.

  2. Info: are you sure it absolutely has to be a solicitor? Usually signiture witnessing can be done by a variety of other professionals that won’t charge so much.

  3. Post office offer a service whereby they confirm that copies of documents are genuine. Maybe they do for signatures too.

  4. Why does it need to be a solicitor?

I can’t think of a situation were that is a requirement.

  5. 100 is a going hour fee probably.

I know they really split it down too, so eg they’ll count mins on phone and if its a tenth of an hour then they bill accordingly.

Emails under so many words are £25 etc etc.

But as someone said depending what it’s for, someone in good standing may able to do it, just as they do with passport photos and the post office charge a tenner for licences or other stuff checked.
