Hey guys, I’m trying to improve my social skills as of lately. When I make a phone call, the other person usually picks up by stating their name.

Is it best repeat their name before you introduce yourself or should you just state your own name? So something along the lines of

1. Hi jane, this is john speaking,
Vs.
2 this is john speaking.

This is mainly for calls I need to make at work

  1. If Person 2 out ranks you, then you say, “Welcome Person 1, this is Daisybelle_1313, etc,”

If you outrank them, then you say, “This is Daisybelle_1313, welcome, Person 2.”
    That’s for Zoom calls.

Phone calls, if Person one outranks you, you say it similarly:
    “Person1, I’m Daisybelle_1313. Etc.”

    If you outrank them:
“This is Daisybelle_1313. Person 2, please? Thank you!”

    Introductions in person, for fun:
Top rank people get introduced to lower rank people first.

“Person 1, meet Person 2, he’s the new CFO.”
“Person 2, meet Person 1, she’ll be your boss.” Etc.

Traditionally within equals, women are first.
“Susan, meet Bob and his wife, you’re all CFO’s together.” Etc.

So yes, if they outrank you say “Hi John, this is Daisy.”
If you outrank them then you could be relaxed and say the same.

  2. I say “Hi, this is *name* from *company* calling. Is *customer* available?”

If they say “yes this is *customer*” I just say “hi *customer*, I’m calling regarding bla bla bla”
