and when did it get popular?

  1. It’s what it sounds like when a heavily accented and excited American says the word “America”. It’s at least 20 years old as a meme. I’m not exactly sure where it started.

  2. It’s how “America” sounds when said with a heavy accent, especially with a lot of emphasis. It’s been a meme forever. Here’s how I used to explain it.

    A. Jokingly playing the part of how foreigners (particularly Europeans) think we act and speak anyway

    B. A sort of thoughtless “fuck it, its fun” approach to patriotism

  3. “Murica Fuck Yeah” is from the movie Team America: World Police.

It’s making fun of the blind patriotism certain segments of Americans display.

Not sure if “murica” originated from that movie, but it was sure popularized by it.

  4. It is from a movie by the *South Park* guys called *Team America: World Police*. Basically, anything that could be remotely positive about America (and some that are not) gets the positive exclamation ‘MURICA!

There was a song that accompanied the movie and it is funny because they run through all the things that make America ‘great’ and when they get to “Libraries” the ‘MURICA!’ response is muted and confused.

  5. Fun fact: The Irish (Gaeilge) word for America is “Meiriceá.”

The pronunciation is not the same, but I do giggle every time I see it.

  6. I can just imagine someone from Maryland, Delaware or Pennsylvania saying it like this. It’s really just a shortened word, not really much more than that.

  7. I don’t now for sure, but I remember noticing people saying it during George W Bush’s presidency. With his accent, it sounded a bit like he was saying “Murica” at times, especially if he was speaking quickly.

  8. It started during George W. Bush’s presidency with how he’d say “America” with his accent.

  9. I think George Bush popularized it. That’s kind of how he speaks in his fake Texan accent.

  10. It comes from the same place Straya comes from (for Australia): thick-accented people saying the proper name with marbles in their mouths.
