  1. In Brazil the color you wear when the new year starts stands for what you’re wishing for. White for peace, pink for love, yellow/gold for money, etc. Most people wear white on the outside, and underwear in the color you’re wishing for.

You also have to eat 12 grapes for fortune, 12 spoonfuls of lentils for whatever, jump 12 waves when you’re at the beach… seems like every year someone comes up with a new thing.

  2. We have a Halloween rip-off celebration on November 11 but without the costumes and kids sing songs in front of the door to get candy.

  3. Chahar shanbeh soori. Jumping over a pit of fire to rid of yourself of any sickness and bad luck to start anew with good luck and health in the Persian New Year (Nowruz).

  4. It’s more of a pass down from my ancestors, but there’s nothing more American than a bunch of immigrants.

Our New Year’s involves pork and Sauerkraut from Germany, English brown bread, and black-eyed peas from the South. We also have a very large family gathering on Christmas Eve like our Italian family used to, though not seven fishes. You have to eat at least one black-eyed pea for luck!
