Has anyone tried video chatting with someone before meeting in person ?

To me it’s an easy way to say hi, see if the person actually looks like their pics, and see if you have any chemistry before meeting.

  1. I haven’t done it, and I refuse to do it. Seems like the worst of both worlds: all the stress of an in-person date, with the low information and concerns about whether the person is who they claim to be that are problems with online messaging before meeting. For instance, I don’t know if this person really lives near me. Also, people look and sound different IRL than on video, and there’s no sense of smell with video. An in-person date involves a certain basic commitment that I see as positive: you have to set aside the time, show up, and have an organized schedule.

Video chatting is what I use to stay in touch with friends/family. I want to keep it limited to that; I don’t need to verify what my friends look like. Online dating is already sketchy enough without making it even more so.

  2. I hate it. I’d do it briefly if someone was nervous but it wouldn’t be a long chat for sure.

How can you be sure that chemistry in person will show up on video or the reverse of thinking you have chemistry on video and nothing IRL? I’m truly wondering because chemistry is huge to me and you could save me time… I don’t know how you do this.

  3. I have tried this with a girl i really liked. We met on pof, talked for a month off app. We had really good chemistry and she always complemeted me. I wanted to call her but she suggested a zoom call and i said sure. We talked for an hour on zoom and she ghosted me the next day. Now i dont like video calls and prefer calling or just seeing eachother. I sent her plenty of pictures of myself so she knew what i looked like but i think i looked ugly on camera or something.

  4. I haven’t done much of that, but that does sound like a good idea. I feel like video chatting should become more of a norm. Abolish forming relationships through texting
