So I’d booked and paid for the Clyde Hostel in Glasgow through Hostelworld. But when I got there they first asked me for a passport, I said that I didn’t bring one (not having thought that we needed one to go to Scotland just yet). They then asked for any other ID and I said I didn’t have any except for a photocopy of my passport on my phone, which they said that they couldn’t accept (although everywhere that asked for ID after this accepted it) and that it was very clear on the booking that I needed to bring valid ID. So I went away thinking it was my fault for not checking the Ts&Cs. Then I decided to check the booking to see how clear it was and after opening the Ts&Cs what it actually said was “we do not cater for local or British groups. In order to stay with us you need to produce a foreign licence / passport”. Screenshot as proof: https://i.redd.it/tgefx26uqni91.jpg . So even if I had had ID they still wouldn’t have let me in after accepting my booking and taking my money. The thing is I booked through Hostelworld and on their form you have to put in your nationality, so it should have stopped me there but they still took my booking.

  2. Discrimination based on nationality is illegal in the UK as its covered by the race protected characteristic

  3. I think you’re misreading, they clearly say “we do not cater for local or British *groups*” – not individuals like you, *groups*. A lot of cheaper accommodation options (holiday parks, campsites, hostels) refuse group bookings and/or single-sex group bookings for a bunch of reasons mostly to do with disruptive stag & hen does etc. I’ve never seen one allow groups just because they’re not UK but that’s the underlying rationale here.

If you’d produced ID, you’d’ve been allowed to stay regardless of your nationality (not least because it would be illegal to refuse you). I am dubious about whether it’s legal to discriminate against groups by nationality, but I’m not enough of an expert to know.

(Pls do not argue with me about whether this is right or wrong, I don’t work for the hostel).

ETA: the full blurb for the hostel clearly says that individuals and couples are fine

  4. That’s why people say to book direct with hotels and places rather than through a 3rd party website

  5. I’ve worked in hostels abroad and they wouldn’t accept locals or groups of locals because they’d often book it for a cheap place to get wrecked and pick up.

  6. Discrimination.

They allow me to stay, OR I have trading standards here quicker than they can close the doors for being racist.

  7. You showed up without ID when you were told not to and got turned away. This is not a race thing, you just need to remember ID when you travel.

  8. Some hotels are very old fashioned, you used to have to write a letter to the hotel manager to ask to stay, and if they didn’t think you would ‘fit in’ or if you were trying to book a room with someone you weren’t married to you would be turned away

Some of them haven’t forgotten the old days yet and still have that *oo I am the hotel manager* ego about them, best to just stay somewhere else until they’re gone, you won’t have a good time there

[^(here)](https://www.ielts-mentor.com/writing-sample/gt-writing-task-1/3593-you-want-to-book-a-hotel-for-family-holiday) ^(is a link to how that would be done, on a website teaching English as a foreign language that is around 30+ years out of date, but apparently still relevant for this place)

  9. i think by this they mean they do not accept groups such as school trips, stag/hen do’s etc i dont think it means individual and small groups of travellers.

In my experience with hostels you always have to have a gov certified photo ID (in many countries ive been to its been passport only)
