When you’re in a conversation and somebody says something like “I have diabetes” or “I actually don’t have a dad”. What’s the best response? Can I avoid having this sensitive topic come up?

Usually I end up saying I’m sorry to hear that and then get awkward, then an abrupt change in subject.

  1. Hey, I’m not the best with people and communication in general but if I wanted to seem concerned and listening, I would ask how they are coping/dealing with that and maybe show compassion to whatever they answer. They said it, let them elaborate…

  2. “That sounds very difficult, how are you doing with all that?”

“I’m so sorry to hear. My deepest sympathies.”
