Hi,

Not sure what my next move is, advice is welcome!

So I have a background in sales, marketing and 8+ years in product management in big burocratic companies. I never got into a real management role and the roles I had were not software product roles but more like commercial products.

I failed a ton of software product manager interviews so when I got an offer as a product marketing manager job at a tech startup I took the job. I thought this would give me more diversity and keep me from getting stuck in the product role I had previously had forever. It would also put me in a better position to be a software product manager.

This firm said there would be two more hires that I’ll work with , one reporting to me and a likelihood that I’d be promoted to director. I figure I’ll do this for a year and see how I like it and then decide if I move towards product or move up into product marketing.

-> fast forward to today, 8 months in and they froze those hires until the new year. I’ll have been doing the job of what was supposed to be 3 people by myself for the entire time. They Gave me a raise , either cause I’m doing a good job or so I don’t quit. Or both.

I’ve learned a ton and I’m making a bunch more money which is great, but it’s taken a Real toll on me mentally. I’m working farrr more after hours and weekends just to stay afloat.

I really don’t know what my next move is. My plan is to stick it out a year and then find a next step (bonus and options vest). This job is in a new industry I should mention, which is less mission driven from the industry where I used to work which sucks.

Any advice on what I should do Is appreciated !
