Was on quite a long road journey last week and I noticed that there is absolutely no radio station that I like. It’s either blandness (heart, smooth) unlistenable (radio 1, capital), timewarp (planet rock) or angry people (lbc, talk radio.) I ended up having to settle for absolute radio because it was the only thing that played anything close to a variety. Aside from things that could obviously never work (I want a radio station that plays a combination of jazz, classic country and rugby league commentaries etc), what radio station do you think should exist but doesn’t?

For me it’s a proper rock radio station, something that plays some classic rock, some modern stuff, some metal etc. Essentially what team rock used to be before their model of ’employ expensive presenters and run no adverts’ had the obvious result. I’d also like a decent country station that doesn’t just love Luke Bryan and friends but will play a bit of a variety of styles of country.

  1. If you want music, use Spotify

If you want talking, find a podcast

The only reason I listen to the raido is because the journey is too short to bother with either

  2. I agree a fully encompassing rock, metal and alternative radio station is a massive gap in the market.

Something between Kerrang, Planet Rock, Primordial and BBC6music would be ideal.

People will just say “stream you own stuff” but algorithms don’t work properly on streaming platforms and I like the idle chatter between songs that a traditional radio station gives.

  3. I’d like a decent rock/alt/indie station, but I also deeply resent someone else choosing what I listen to.

Then again, I still buy physical product and far more than I can reasonably digest, so not an issue I have.

  4. We used to have a station up here in t’north very similar to your request by name of Rock FM, sadly it changed to XS and is shit now 🙁 One of the great things about music today is it’s so diverse, but that probably makes it next to impossible to have a radio station audience, I stick with Radio 4 these days.

  5. Proper dance music radio – aside from Rinse, there’s fuck all on DAB. Maybe if you dig for FM pirates, if they still exist?

For me, the best station would play a mixture of Test Match Special, Grateful Dead live gig recordings, and early 90s rave music. Bit of ISIHAC for colour. Strictly no adverts.

  6. I wouldn’t mind a cross between Radio 1 and Radio 6 — aimed at younger people but with more of a focus on niche genres and depth.

I have to say that I can usually find *something* on BBC Radio I want to listen to, though. It’s probably my favourite part of the corporation

  7. I would love a rock/alternative radio station at the moment, I’m starting to get fed up of my own music library.

Pre-covid there seemed a steady stream of good songs/albums being released, now there’s 1 or 2 good albums a year. My ‘recently added’ playlist has never been so empty.

  8. Radio 6 plays a good mix but is a little low on metal perhaps. I’ve definitely heard everything from early blues, the craziest jazz possible, old-timey music, krautrock, post-punk, noise, doom, twee indie folk, possibly all of the above just on Iggy Pop’s show.

  9. One that would do things like, oh, this was a great song, and we know some of you weren’t listening to it right, so we are going to play it again for you.

  10. Try Primordial Radio.
All the rock, plus loads of new music, none of the adverts.
    Great community, well worth it.

  11. Apple Music Radio stations are the best radio stations in my opinions. They are various different shows only lasting 1-2 hours, interviews with musicians, plays all types of music for everybody and no pointless chatter.

  12. One were they don’t turn laughter up to 15 for not funny jokes and repeated life observations that have been covered before.

  13. I don’t mind talking on the radio between songs, breaks it up and some are rather entertaining to listen to, but shut the fuck up when the song is playing, I hate hearing the start and finish of a song ruined by some knob head, D list radio host who hasn’t cracked out a good joke in 20 years.

  14. I want a radio station that plays good music all morning instead of having one or more hyped-up idiots laughing hysterically and waffling crap. I’ve just stumbled out of bed, who decided that’s what we want to hear?

  15. Radio 6 plays quite a lot of the stuff you’re asking for tbh… it’s like the pick and mix bag of radio. Of course with that comes every other genre known to man as well. I quite like it – you certainly never hear the same thing twice.

  16. I’m also a rock/metal and punk fan and having planet rock as the only rock station is terrible they’re so cliché with the choice of songs. If your going to play a Metallica song maybe don’t just play enter sandman the song that everyone’s heard thousands of times playing something a bit more unique and give a spotlight to bands that might not get radio play on more commercial rock radio stations.

  17. I love Planet Rock tbh. It has made me appreciate forgotten music. Kerrang is a good radio station.

  18. Choose your programs on BBC Sounds. Radio 1 and Radio 6 Music on catch up should sort you out. Though I still miss John Peel.

  19. Audio fiction. I know the BBC airs dramas on Radio 4 but given how there is so much top quality audio fiction out there these days I’m shocked there isn’t a station picking up the rights to top audio dramas and airing them or even commissioning their own.

  20. I’d like a decent jazz station. I’ve been a metalhead for decades but got right into jazz over the past couple of years. I haven’t even started delving into modern jazz though and the London jazz scene is apparently amazing. I think a decent UK jazz station would help me discover some beauties…

  21. As far as I’m aware a popular low-fi/chill study beats station doesn’t exist. In an ideal world there would be no adverts. You could have a change in genre at certain times, like maybe cool ambient sounds at night, or some relaxing spoken-word poems or something like that. But overall just chill and relaxing.
