I’ve been in IT the past 5 years. Business analyst to developer. I really want to get into a data oriented position, but every job posting wants so much from a data analyst or data engineer. How do you switch to one of these paths if everyone expects experience even at the lower end of the rules (associate or junior)? Anyone have any advice?

Just apply! Let the company decide if you’re qualified.
I was in technical customer service for 2 years engineering for 5 years, leaped into data analytics for the engineering team. I grew tired of the monotony of data sheets after 3 years. At the beginning of the year applied as a Software Engineer and got the job.
Just apply, you’ll never step in a new direction if you don’t put your foot out the door.
