Which life events shaped your beliefs if you’re spiritual but not religious?

  1. i was “spiritual, but not religious” for a few years in my 20s. being raised in religion (christian) meant i had a lot of mental baggage even after i jettisoned formal religion from my worldview. “magical thinking” is the best way to sum it up. attributing agency to things that aren’t sentient, seeing meaning in patterns or coincidences, inventing another layer of reality, etc.

it’s fairly easy to see religion is bullshit, but a bit harder to actually retrain yourself out of the childhood indoctrination.
