I’m autistic, and while I mostly function pretty well, I’ve been struggling lately that my favourite food is unavailable. I’ve had a PBS sandwich for lunch four or five times a week for the last 35 years.

While it is currently unavailable (at least in my local branches), is anyone aware of any product that is very similar, in both taste and texture? I don’t necessarily mind slicing it myself, but ideally it would come sliced too.

  1. I’m a bit lost on how to help you here, but would you like me to explain how you could make your own tasty sausage sandwich?

  2. I haven’t seen that exact product, so can’t compare but it looks similar to the Oakhurst breakfast pork patties that we buy from Aldi.

  3. I was going to suggest Morrisons pork breakfast patties but I looked at what your talking about on the Sainsbury’s website and it’s nothing alike

I’d recommend taking a photo of that product to a deli and letting them know what your situation is, it seems like something you’d find easier at a deli honestly, I know my Morrisons had a deli for example I’d expect most stores have them now

You’ll probably be able to see the sausage before it’s cut and then get it sliced how youd like before buying anything

  4. Would it be possible for you to go to a different store if they had stock there, than your usual one, and maybe stock up on them if so?

The reason I ask is you could find out stock levels of that product at alternative stores without actually going to them, then when you know if they have them you can go and buy them, if that was an option for you.

Or alternatively if they had them available online for a delivery.

  5. You could look at Mattessons smoked sausage. Polish shops also have similar products however the flavour might be different.

  6. Tesco Pork Luncheon Meat?

No guarantees, it just looks sort of similar and the name implies it should be similar.

  7. Try products called “luncheon meat” at other supermarkets and see what you think. “Billy bear” ham is also similar.

  8. Insider knowledge tells me it’s “on hold” meaning there’s either a production or distribution issue.
