Grew up in South Florida and was used to the hard partying. I was under the impression that every city in the country had after hour spots, strip clubs open until 6 am, DJs playing 24 hour marathon sets. Then I got stationed in San Diego and realized that unless it’s Miami or NYC most cities just stop partying early. Even the clubs in Vegas close down kinda early (4-6 am). Why did these cities legislate those type of laws that stop the partying early, and what makes Miami/NYC different?

  1. I don’t know how to tell you this, but stopping partying at ***4-6am*** is not “early” to most people.

  2. The desire to party past around maybe 2 or 3 is a niche desire. Places where there are lots of people very close together (NYC) or places where the nightlife is part of the tourist draw of the city (Miami, Vegas) are the only places likely to have enough people to make it financially worth it to do that.

  3. Cocaine is less popular.

If there is not enough big enough market it will not be made available. Not prudish, economics.

  4. What do you think is more likely “most cities just stop partying early” or a couple cities just have a later night life? Which do you think is more abnormal?

  5. Most places just do not want to put up with the collateral damage (fights, puke, alcohol poisoning, DUIs, etc) caused by people partying late into the night.

Typically there is some limit (in my experience around 2AM) which acts as a compromise between people who want to party and everyone else. This is also why the party locations are typically confined to some set geographic area.

  6. They call NYC “the city that never sleeps” for a reason. It’s unusual. Most cities need their sleep.

  7. One reason for enforced last calls is because bars are often in/near residential neighborhoods. Bars attract noise and riff raff – especially late night, so it’s a way to carry out peaceful quality of life.

Last call in non-residential areas exists to allow municipal services. Bars attract drivers – and parked cars prevent early AM street sweeping, trash collection, deliveries, etc.

As well, there’s fewer emergency services on duty between 2AM and 7AM. Fewer cops to catch drunk drivers, fewer EMTs to deal with accidents, etc.

For the record, NYC last call is 4AM and a hard close at 4:30. After hours spots aren’t legal (tho some exist).

  8. It’s fine to keep it in those types of cities specifically made for that kind of night life. It’s what makes those places unique! We good over here with our good nights’ rest and peace and quiet in the middle of the night. 😂
