Say an American says, “I deadlifted 2 plates”

Does that mean two 45lb on each end? (i.e. 225lb)

Or does it mean one on each end, for a total of 135lb?

Or does it mean something else? Are the plates in question not 45lb ones? I’m lost here.

  1. Plates are typically 45 pounds each. Lifting two plates would be two on each end plus the bar or 225 as you noted.

  2. Yes, 225 is right. Plates are standardized here as well, so when you see “plate” it does indeed mean a 45lbs / 20kg weight. The standard straight or oly bar is also 20kg.
