My sister has been struggling with self esteem for a number of years. She lives in a different province, she just celebrated her birthday alone and was very upset about it and expressed that to us on our group chat and then left.

I want to reach out to her to see how she’s doing, but I want to wait a few days, maybe a week for the dust to settle before doing so.

What should I say? I’ve reached out to her before and asked how she was after something like this happened, but it was ignored. I want to know the best way to approach this.

  1. As someone who has felt like your sister, don’t wait a week. It adds to the feeling of rejection and been alone.
Just message saying exactly that – how are you doing?
Give her chance to respond, and then follow it up maybe the next day if she hasn’t replied.

  2. Might be better to try to do something positive for her (fun conversations, etc) rather than ask her to vent. You have to play that by ear though–sometimes it really helps people to let out some of their negative feelings–other times it keeps them dwelling on the negative, and in some cases they just want something fun.
