Financially I’m fine either way.

26m with a wife and daughter, a second on the way. I was offered a Job in Austin Texas for 122k, not rich by any means but I can get by okay. Putting in my resignation at my 70k population town (where I was making 96.5k) I got an offer from a group in the town for 125k. Huge raise and I can do quite well for my small city. But I feel like a bigger city would be more fun for my kids, there’s not much to do here, most people go out of town every weekend to have fun and it’s so hot I don’t want to force them to go outside in this unbearable sun. We do water stuff outside sometimes but it can get stale. Austin has more opportunities for indoor fun and even though I’ll make less, I feel like it’s worth it.

Ideas? Experiences?

  1. Do what you believe will better the quality of life for your family. Are the schools good in your area vs Austin? Do you think your kids will be exposed to as much life experiences in your current town vs Austin? But then you also have to weigh your cost of living. It’s not worth moving to a big city if you feel like you have to sacrifice your families quality of life for the sake of cost of living.

Personally I love Austin. It’s like a big city without pretentiousness like you’d see in SF, NY, LA. You don’t feel like you have to spend a ton to have fun in Austin. Most restaurants are casual and outdoors. Lots of folks enjoying the outdoors running on trails, stand up paddle boarding on the river, swimming in Barton Springs. I think in Austin you’d have more opportunity to earn even more than $122k. You’re only 26 and your career will definitely progress over time.
