I am short at 5’6” but I have broad shoulders and fairly athletic. I am trying to buy clothes by first looking for brands online that have clothes I like. I will go to a physical store later to actually try them on.

However, all the modes I see on these sites are tall and skinny; which makes me think that those clothes wouldn’t suit me. So, men of reddit, where do I find clothes for my body types.

Also, any advice on picking styles that work well for me are also welcome. Thank you!

  1. Bonobos, they’re not the cheapest but they have button down shirts that come in short length and they have pants with 28 inseam. i’m 5;4 and they’re basically my go to brand

  2. Make friends with your tailor.

When you find a pair of jeans you like, disregard the length. Take them to the tailor and be sure to have him hem them then REATTACH THE ORIGINAL HEM. Should set you back $10-15. You’ll look great.

  3. Find a tailor and find a brand that sells the closest fit to your body type. Length of the shirt is easier to shorten than fixing the shoulder length.

I started to buy my nicer shirts from those made to order places such as indochino and proper. Those are my nicest looking and best fitting dress shirts

  4. Tailor. As men we are actually kind of lucky with clothing, yeah we have a shitty style selection compared to women, but as a man literally anything will make you look good if it’s fitted right.

You can buy a Vanhusen dress shirt from JCPenny for 30 bucks, get it tailored and you’ll look like you spend 400 bucks on it

  5. Depending on your budget, you can certainly shop higher end retailers for better fabrics and better, modern fits. But most importantly is to know the basics about how clothing is supposed to fit in the first place. From denims. To suits. To Athletic wear. To t-shirts. All shirt types have their own guidelines for length and how snug they should be on your shoulders and chest; how tapered at the waste.

You can find plenty of info on YouTube or Google searches. You might be surprised at what you see – what you’ve been wearing wrong for years 🤣.

  6. My husband is 5’5″ and has a n athletic body type. He seems to prefer clothes from Banana Republic and UNIGLO …

  7. I’ve been buying true classic shirts for a while. They fit well, I’m not super athletic but they squeeze the arms just right, but also leave room for my gut. A little pricey compared to the box store tees, but not bad if you get a lot of uelse out of them. As for jeans I wear levis 505 and haven’t had any issues or complaints.

  8. 1. You’re gonna want to find a tailor. They can help make almost any clothing choice personally fitted to you.
    2. Maybe look up a fashion consultant near you. They can teach you what’s going to look good on your body type, face shape, etc. And then you’ll have a better idea about what to be looking for when shopping alone. Or they might even help shopping. Then it goes to the tailor to finish fit if necessary.
