Probably a dumb question, but if you’re giving a guy a handjob as part of foreplay, but you don’t want to make him cum from that as you’re planning to move onto a blowjob/PIV, should you still use lube for the handjob? Or would that make it seem like you are trying to make him cum from that and don’t want to do anything else after? I know people will tell me to communicate, but I have a lot of anxiety and just want to get a sense of what would generally be expected.

Probably not.
It’s that or spit. Unless they like it real dry and chafing.
Light touch and/or spit if you wanna play. Use some lube when you’re ready to fuck, as needed.
Flavored lube is nice. It enables you to do whatever you want, and then it doesn’t taste like penis. Lol. I dont know this from experience. I am straight, but my wife tells me it makes it better.
Personally, when I am just feeling him up, kinda groping/massaging his erection, moving his foreskin back and forth or slipping a finger under it, lube would be far too involved. Not needed either, his wetness is enough. To me, that is not a handjob. Just some heavy petting to arouse him further, and part of my hands wandering all over him, if that makes sense.
If I am giving a handjob, it‘s more about touching him in ways he himself can‘t, because too intense – and then yes lube is mandatory. But I do not give those as part of foreplay, only as a main act in their own right.
You can probably do it however you want to and he won’t complain about anything.
I always use lube. No risk of irritation for him and I’m sure it feels nicer.
My girl will lick her palm while staring at me then go to work. Not sure why but it gets me going every single time
