I currently live in South Yorkshire, both me and my husband can live anywhere and still do our jobs. Just need access to trains/airports, so not too remote. And we can’t afford London type house prices. Where is best to live? Good cost of living, good for families, preferably countryside, seaside but with access to a city?
Any ideas would be great!
Thanks!

  2. East coast of Scotland would be ideal, close to the coast and a stone’s throw from Edinburgh. Lots of lovely seaside towns though they’re a bit pricier to buy a house in, but plenty of options further into the countryside.

  3. Somewhere near Liverpool, like the Wirral or Chester. Coast and countryside areas nearby (plus North Wales not so far by car) and you’d be near Liverpool (there’s a toll fee by car though), Cheshire Oaks retail outlet, Birkenhead and Chester. Merseyrail covers a lot of the area (train stations about every half a mile along their routes), plus buses. Manchester and Liverpool airports both nearby. Somewhere on the other side of Liverpool might be good too, like in Knowsley or Sefton.

Or maybe down South or East Anglia (probably nicer seaside, but maybe the houses are expensive), South Wales or near Newcastle. Dunno much about those places though.

  4. Newcastle upon Tyne has an airport, a metro network, and a train station. Also a lovely place to live.

  5. My friend has been singing the praises of Newcastle non-stop. It does: look lovely, have nearby coast, not cost the earth, etc. I think it does even have an airport.

Edinburgh might be even lovelier (and have a more functional airport).

  6. Central belt of Scotland. Ideally a commuter town as then you’ll have great transport links, affordable housing and significant access to green space.

I’m in Cumbernauld, we’ve got motorway links to the north and to Glasgow, rail to Glasgow, Edinburgh and Stirling. Long distance coaches north and south, and even mainland Europe at certain times of the year. But housing is very affordable and there’s a lot of green space around the town.

I’ve got family and friends in England who paid more for a flat than I did for a 4 bed house with garden and garage.
