In my country we have an exam that the whole country takes at the same time. We get up to 100 points. And to go to a certain high school you need an exact amount of points. There are also special classes where you need more then 100 points. However you can only get 40 points from the exam. The 60 points you get depending on how you did in school. So Im interested to see if Americans have some kind of system similar to this ?

  1. No. We don’t have that for public schools.

Some private schools require an entrance exam but it is rare. Some magnet or charter schools require an entrance exam of some kind.

You are entitled to public education through grade 12.

  2. I had to for my high school, but it’s not a standard practice. In many cases where you attend high school is based on your location or an application process (not necessarily an exam).

  3. Not likely for a general taxpayer funded school.

Some schools in some districts may require them, if its a competitive magnet school you have to apply for.

Some private schools may require an entrance exam as part of the admissions process.

Overall, the vast majority of high schools will not require an entrance exam.

  4. Not really, there are assessments given out throughout your time in school that you generally have to pass in order to graduate high school or to go from middle to high school, but they aren’t really entrance exams. Those don’t exist for public schools in most cases, I’m sure there are some outliers out there that I don’t know about though.

  5. Private high schools may have an entrance exam or some other admission requirements.

Public K-12 education is a requirement in all states though. In general, if you graduate 8th grade in your school district, you just move on to high school.

Charter schools, a kind of sort of hybrid between public and private, often will have some type of entrance exam or lottery to get in.

  6. I don’t know of a public school that requires an entrance exam, but plenty of private/charter schools do.

The only caveat to this is that some school districts don’t allow students to advance to the next grade if they score too poorly on their state’s yearly standardized exams or fail classes. In those cases failing a test/class may prevent someone from moving from middle school to high school temporarily, but they’d be able to get in after repeating their grade in the following year.

  7. There are no admission requirements for high school in general, but some districts may have specific high schools that require kids to apply, and those applications may involve some sort of test.

  8. Here in San Francisco you have to take one to get into certain impacted / high achieving high schools, but not to get into high school in general

  9. You may need to test into exclusive/elite schools, but regular public school from K-12 is a right in most if not all states (possibly even federally).

  10. Most public schools do not have an entry exam.

    However a specialty school may.

Our city schools have a highscool that focuses on the performing Arts. Students must submit their art work portfolio, or perform several musical, vocal or instrumental, pieces for review.

A subcommittee evaluates and accepts those that impressed them.

Private schools may require an entry exam.

  11. Nope, too many middle schoolers would fail and teachers are effectively barred from holding kids back a grade.

  12. Not for Public schools, Schooling is compulsory until 16-18 depending on the State, so Public High Schools must take everyone. Private Schools may or may not have require a test for admission, but there’s also probably a good number of them who will accept anyone with a check that won’t bounce

  13. >In my country we have an exam that the whole country takes at the same time.

Just like /u/old_week [pointed out yesterday](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskAnAmerican/comments/xhuguk/comment/iozxw00/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3), almost nothing is done by all students at all schools across the country.

Nothing like you’re describing exists for all studnets at all schools across the US for entrance to or exit from school. Some schools might have entrance exams, some schools might have placement exams but not all students at all schools.

  14. Everyone is entitled to public education, even those with learning disabilities. And it is a legal requirement for parents to enroll their child into some sort of curriculum (public schools, private schools, or homeschooling).

Our schools are designed to accommodate majority of kids. There can be challenging classes for high achieving students, and more life skills type classes for lower achieving students.

  15. No, not for public school. For private school, I did take a test before I started so they could know what classes to put me in
