Looking for advice on places to move. 32 years old, working a fully remote job that would allow me to move anywhere ~100k. I would like to move out west. Have 1 dog, want to stay in the US. My priorities would be as follows:

Proximity to mountains/ good skiing
Golfing
Dating
Population of at least ~50k
Decent cost of living although I get that probably won’t happen

Have been looking at:

Tacoma: never been
Denver/CO Springs: expensive, kind of far from mountains
Santa Fe: kind of far from good skiing
Somewhere east/west of Tahoe: expensive, but am currently here and think it’s great

I am sure there won’t be one perfect place, but a place that checks 2 or 3 boxes is fine. Anyone have any thoughts on the above places or anywhere else I should be adding to the list? Thanks!

  1. I really like Tacoma so thats a good thought. Your 20 minutes from Seattle which is an amazing city in-and-of-itself but you get the payoff of a cheaper cost of living. Food in the Seattle area is amazing. Lots of seafood but less people know that Seattle is a major port of entry to the US as well, so you get lots of ethnic food also, and there is an international market downtown. Not sure about skiing or golfing there but I’ve hiked around Ranier and its phenomenal.

Ive been to Santa Fe and its quaint, nice, picturesque and beautiful. But more of a honeymoon spot for a romantic getaway than a place I would want to live. Albuquerque has a few colleges, better bar scene and a little bit more going on.

CO Springs was dirty to me and not nearly as beautiful as Denver. Denver is obviously quite close to the mountains. Plenty of 14’ers to hike within a few hours drive.

Look at Rapid City, SD. Very outdoors, small town USA, but progressive. The military base brings in a lot of talent and higher education. Small college there keeps things chill and fun. The black hills are amazingly gorgeous.

Also consider Tucson Arizona. I thought it was a bit dirty as a city but the golfing is supreme and you can play year round. You are close to Mt. Lemmon which isn’t a premier ski resort but it is the US’s southern most ski resort and it does get natural snow. The hiking is phenomenal there as well.

  2. Washington and northern Oregon are great if you love the rain. Southern Oregon and northern California have drier weather, but a lot of wild fires and very hot summers.

Personally, I think the whole west coast is going down hill. Crime is picking up quite a bit. The cartels are moving in with the legalized marijuana. It’s getting less and less safe here. We’re actually moving to the east coast to get away from it.
