I know this is a very vague question, I’m just curious as a Virginian. What do you think of when you’re thinking of Virginia? What are its defining characteristics? Is it one of the better states in your opinion? What do you think about it politically?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and opinions.

  1. I’m from Indiana…your state hasn’t entered my mind until you posted this question lol… Still got nothing

  2. Imo it’s one of the most diverse states. The dmv, the Virginia Beach/Newport area, and western Virginia all seem very different to me with very different cultures

  3. when I was a kid, my family took a road trip from the deep south (where we lived) to DC. driving through Virginia was some of the first time I’d really seen mountains before. It was so beautiful and it made a big impact on me at the time. that’s what I think of when I think of Virginia.

  4. Makes me think of the novel, and tv show, the Virginian which is about, presumably, a Virginian who moved to Wyoming. And there is a restaurant too. Lol

  5. It has southern and northern vibes. A cheaper place to live, which is good for some. People are friendly. I like that it has an Atlantic coastline. Overall, a good state!

  6. I think of NoVa and my family there and it makes me happy. I love visiting, it’s a beautiful state.

  7. How can one generalize an entire state/commonwealth? I can only assure that Olympia Dukakis’ accent in Steel Magnolias is no way representative of that of Virginia as was depicted.

  8. Lots of natural beauty with four seasons, the people are pretty friendly, interesting history.

Hot and sticky as hell in the summer, cold in the winter. I swear, the humidity is 10x worse in NOVA than it is in Mississippi, almost had a pint glass slip out of my hand on more than one occasion due to the condensation.

I’ve spent a fair amount of time in DC and always stay on the NOVA side of the Potomac when I’m there. Also driven through the state. Would like to experience the beaches the next time I’m out there!

Politically it’s a mixed bag, I don’t think I would mind living there from a political perspective, but from what I understand politics there is highly dependent entirely on which geographic part of the state one is in. Unlike most states with a urban/rural split on politics, VA’s political spectrum is basically NOVA on one side and everywhere else on the other, including Richmond, Virginia Beach/Norfolk, etc. I could be over generalizing though.

  9. Cool state. [Luray Caverns](https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=luray+caverns&FORM=HDRSC3) is sick and so is the [Shenandoah Valley](https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=shenandoah+valley&go=Search&qs=ds&form=QBIR&first=1&tsc=ImageHoverTitle) Both great places I visited during the past summer. I went to Virginia Beach as a kid and thought it was fun, but recently went there as an adult and I found it be a bit boring for a beach town. Not much nightlife or things to do. NOVA is chill. Reading about Virginia’s role in the Civil War is interesting too.

  10. All I’ve ever heard is that apparently Virginia state troopers are super strict about speeding tickets.

  11. I don’t think about it at all, tbh. I mean… I guess I think it’s pretty green? Lots of trees and stuff. Lol

  12. Seems very diverse ranging from DC area the coast and up into the interior.

I mostly associate it with the old South and DcC related stuff but that’s just me. I haven’t spent much time (hardly any) in rural VA.

Also, I know you as that southern state without good BBQ, fairly or not.

  13. If you are into history, Richmond, VA is an amazing place. I’ve only gone once for work but it was a cool little city.

  14. Not American – but I think of warm weather, lots of deciduous trees, hilly kind of, and ocean front property. I also think of the accents, like Yosemite Sam but more watered down.

I have never been to Virginia.

  15. Pretty countryside. Diverse population. Decent capitol building.

Some of the worst human beings in the history of the world live or have lived in the DC suburbs, and some of the worst most destructive decisions ever made by people in power have been made there, although you split all that with Maryland and DC I guess.

  16. Idk I’ve only really been to the southwest part of Virginia, so for me, I think of claytor lake and Virginia tech

  17. Home, born and raised in SWVA. However, I will say most of the time currently when I hear VA I get upset about the govonor situation.

  18. I recently learned that Virginia had white slaves before the Revolutionary War. They were typically poor English or Irish people who were rounded up and sent to the new world as indentured servants. Most of the time, they were literally worked to death, and few ever reproduced, unlike the black slaves, who produced more valuable offspring and thus were treated well enough to be healthy enough to reproduce.

  19. Went to college there and lived in Cville for year after I was married / had kids. I love Virginia. It checks all the boxes- easy access to beach, mountains, major cities /airports, great universities ;). Richmond is a bit of a hidden gem imo. We would have loved to stay in Charlottesville, but cost of living was high and we could make more in our fields living in areas with a lower cost of living.
