Would you be weirded out if you went to a potential romantic interest’s apartment and as you walked in, there is a credenza with someone’s urn and a portrait of the deceased hanging behind the urn? Not right in your face with it but it would be against the wall in what could be considered the dining room.

Just moved and trying to figure out how I’m going to layout the place. Please answer as honestly as you can, I feel like it’ll be easy to say it’s not creepy because that’s the “right” thing to say but I need to know gut instinct. My concern is that it is somewhat shrine like although it would just be the urn and the portrait.

  1. Yup. I wouldn’t want to be in anyone’s room with an urn in it. I would prefer that to be buried.

  2. Not creepy! I mean, where and how else do you keep someone’s ashes? Are they supposed to just stuff dad in a cardboard box in the attic? Slip a bottle of mom behind some shoes in the front hall closet?

The manner and placement of the ashes is very respectful. I’d be far more concerned about the alternative options.

  3. Have you ever lost a loved one? It’s a sign of respect and a way to grieve. Some people want to remain close to their loved ones and not bury them in some cemetery only to visit them once a month or less.

  4. Whose ashes and portrait is it? How big is the portrait?

My son’s ashes are on my plant shelf (covering a large window) and a few pictures are on a wall with other photographs of family.
