Have you seen a movie or show that features the Irish language ?

1. The only one that I’ve seen is the It’s Aleays Sunny In Philadelphia episode.

2. That movie The Guard (also starting Brandon Gleason) has a few scenes with characters speaking subtitled Irish, mainly jokes about how the American character doesn’t understand it. I can’t think of anything solely in Irish that got popular, though.

4. I’ve seen a couple, I’m a bit more exposed than most though. None of them are particularly well known here.

We might see a one-off portrayal of someone using Irish in a movie or tv show, but I can’t think of any movie or tv show prominently featuring the Irish language that has mainstream popularity here in the US. Many Americans are proud of their Irish heritage, but keeping the language isn’t really part of that.

   And also, this is off topic, but for anyone who hasn’t seen Primal, do so. It’s ***insanely*** good.

7. The Nightingale. It was great but i’m never watching it again. Really brutal movie.

8. Irish language as in Irish Gaelic? I’ve seen a couple movies with people speaking Irish Gaelic in them, but it’s not prominent. I’ve seen some documentaries where it’s spoken as well.

9. I watched Yu Ming is Ainm Dom in college, but that’s because I was minoring in Irish studies.

11. Unless someone was really, really into their Irish heritage, it would be odd for an American to have any knowledge of Irish — or “Gaelic” as Irish-Americans often call it. I suspect that most of our ancestors spoke English as their main language when they immigrated, say mid 1800s to early 1900s. People might know a few odd phrases and around St. Patrick’s Day, there might be decorations with the (sort of) Irish phrase, Erin Go Braugh.

12. I wanted to see the short film Bainne, which I assume has at least some of the dialogue in Irish, but it’s not available in the US as far as I can tell.

13. Did Derry Girls have them speaking Irish? I don’t know any other than that 😭

I wonder if there are any background extras that might be speaking it when they are directed to just mill about and have a conversation in the background that’s not loud or recognizable enough to be distracting from the main characters dialogue. There could also be silent movies where people were just able to just talk and say whatever because no sound was being recorded.

    I think your best bet would be older movies that was closer yo when the massive waves of Irish immigration which would have more native speakers and there would be more likely to feature people who spoke said language as characters in what was then a contemporary piece and there were lots of commentary on the plight of the Irish in America.

18. I saw *The Wind that Shakes the Barley,* and I’m fairly certain there’s spoken Gaelic in that film. But the reason I’ve seen it is because my family was visiting some (distant) relatives in Ireland around the time it came out.

    I don’t know that I’ve ever seen any American films where Irish was spoken, apart from a phrase here or there at most.

19. The Quiet Man with John Wayne has a scene where Maureen O’Hara speaks it with her priest. Can’t say I’ve seen any other movies with it though.
