What does “pinched fingers” mean?

I saw people do this when they are doing presentations, explaining something, or trying to make a point. Even TV hosts are doing it.

I also heard that it’s very rude and we shouldn’t do it.

What does it 🤌 really mean? Is it socially acceptable/ professional to do this gesture? Thank you!

  1. Gestures in general are just like words: it has different meanings by different culture and languages.

And like words, it also depends on the context.

I’m from Brazil and 👌which is pretty normal meaning OK worldwide, it can be bad (like asshole) or just weird gesture. I live in Europe, and more nowadays 🤌is interpreted quite normal from Italian gesture meaning both “why?” Questioning or “why” explaining something.

Just doing this with the hand is OK, but if you also shake your arms doing this, it can be too much. Just like words, you can use the same word calm and has a meaning, but shouting it is rude.

But again, depend on the context using gestures itself can be rude if your culture or setting (eg. A very formal Speech) does not allow it.

TL;DR there’s not worldwide answer as there’s no worldwide language.

  2. Im italian, we use this usually when we’re asking a question to add emphasis like “what are you doing?? 🤌🏼” or “what is wrong with you? 🤌🏼”

  3. In Syria which is a Mediterranean country
    It’s used as a threat !
    Especially coming from moms lol
So when your mom does this it means i will smack the hell out of u when the guests are gone just wait 🤌
In other context it might aswell mean “wait a bit”
    Or simply “slow down”

  4. In the us it’s basically to emphasize what you’re saying in a confused way like if your friend does something dumb “🤌🏻who does this🤌🏻” or just to emphasize like if you eat something good “🤌🏻this is perfection🤌🏻” you kinda have to exaggerate the words your saying while you do it otherwise it’s kinda off like saying “🤌🏻this is good🤌🏻” feels off
